Chapter 6: living (and working) in a capitalist society: Division of labour is central to how societies work and how social relations are organized. Capitalism governed by profit produced through class structure: competition, scarcity, inequality, not everyone wins fewer people win. Living in a capitalist society defined by work and consumption: to achieve status. We experience work and consumption as choice and want. Elements of class structure: invisibility, power is deemed to be individualized, no coercion (only self-discipline) Class power appears intangible or invisible: we choose to work, we like to shop, we need stuff. And yet : conditions of work, not of our own choosing. Division of labour: flexible and mobile workers, 28 hrs a week fulltime, non-unionized, deskilled, consumers, work stressed and underpaid. Workers controlled by robotic technologies: surveillance. Management by stress theres 100 people who would rather do your job in a heart beat: 1/3 all jobs are precarious (short term, work week 24/7; accessibility to employees.
