Norms established rule or standard which governs our conduct in the social situations we are in. Different types (etiquette, customs) some norms are more serious. Societal expectations to which we are expected to conform. Essential for society to have norms (how we maintain the status quo) Roles demonstrates how individual activity is socially influenced and therefore follows predictable patterns two perspectives on roles: Roles are prescribed patterns of behavior expected of a person in a given situation by virtue of his or her position in the transaction. Socially defined attributes and expectations associated with social positions. Role expectations: a groups or society"s definition of the way a specific role ought" to be played. Interactionalist perspective (role enactment four steps) We can not just analyze social interaction by studying already determined roles. Instead we need to look at how people live out their roles, perceive them, conflicts.
