Empathy-altruism hypothesis: when we feel empathy for someone, we will atempt to help them purely for altruisic reasons. Empathy: puing oneself in the shoes of another person and experiencing events/emoions as they would. Empathy joy hypothesis: helping because of the posiive emoions it will bring to self, in addiion to the other person"s needs. Compeiive altruism hypothesis: helping because it will increase own status. We may feel moivated to help but ended up not helping. Paricipants were most likely to help when alone the more paricipants the less likely they were to help. Paricipants were fastest to ofer help if it was just them and vicim. Step 1 failure to noice: self-concern, distracion, simulus overload. Step 2 failure to interpret as emergency: we look to others for answers in ambiguous or uncertain situaions. Family quarrel or assault by stranger: nobody else seems worried, so it must be nothing.
