Studies do not prove anything: future studies may turn out different, use (cid:858) uppo(cid:396)t(cid:859)/ (cid:858)do (cid:374)ot suppo(cid:396)t(cid:859) We privilege theories that can be shown to be wrong. Examples of theories/ideas that are not falsifiable: freud, rush- yellow fever. No way to convince someone that their therapy is not effective. Saying different aspects of handwriting represent different personality characteristics. Phrenology: builds on the scientific study of localizing brain functions. Graphology: mistaken as scientific: lots of different ways to analyze handwriting (e. g. , slants, loops, pen pressure, etc) Phrenology: thief la(cid:396)ge skull a(cid:396)ea fo(cid:396) (cid:862)a(cid:272)(cid:395)ui(cid:396)i(cid:374)g(cid:863) Anecdotal are selective (confirmation bias): we are not shown cases that do not fit the supposed patterns: seek out evidence that supports your idea, but not the e(cid:448)ide(cid:374)(cid:272)e that does(cid:374)(cid:859)t suppo(cid:396)t it. They will probably try to explain that away. Making up excuses to go against falsifying their idea.
