Motivation: general term, starting, directing, and maintaining physical and psychological activities, pursue activity for its own sake. Hedonism as motivation: pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain, anticipating the future- incentives and rewards, physiological analysis focusing on the mechanistic, william james (1st psychologist to popularize instinct theory, borrowed from darwin"s theories- prewired, adaptive behaviour. Drive: restores a biological homeostasis, freud- deficits lead to psychological anxiety, hull- use antecedent conditions to predict motivational states (eg. lack of food-hunger) Physiological: no grand theory explained everything, so, researchers focused on specific situations and types of people. The motivated and emotional states associated with brain structure. Left prefrontal cerebral cortex- approach motivational and emotional tendencies. Right prefrontal cerebral cortex- withdraw motivational and emotional tendencies.
