PSYC 1030H Lecture 9: Lecture 9
Document Summary
The study of how people interact with their social and physical environments. A sub-discipline of social and behaviour psychology. Affects our health and wellbeing (positive and negative) Early emphasis was on crowding, urban stressors (violence), vs. modern research on ecological sustainability and health care. Can be conducive or not to needs, goals. School near airport: noise of planes while trying to learn. Territory: space based, marked with cues (eg. putting a bag down in spot at library, humans have much more territory. The more personal the marker, the more effect it will have to protect burglary: eg. Pen vs backpack to protect table at library. Burglars know which houses would be easier based on cues. Clothing (veils) can influence amount of personal space. Density: physical parameters of a space in proportion to other people; number of people/unit of space. Feel more crowded in a low ceiling room; focus on specifics.
