Stigma: a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person. Potential barriers to intervention and prevention: pre-existing stereotypes, active stigma towards persons with mental illness. Stereotypes: popular culture: wedding et al. (2010) found that although some movies & tv shows display sympathetic portrayals of persons with mental illnesses, most" do not. Examples of getting it wrong: freud in the movies & tv: The presumption that mental illness has a traumatic etiology is a well-worn plot device. When done right: irony is that films can also have a greater impact than almost any type of information. Films on different disorders: silver linings playbook, insomnia, the hurt locker. Who provides treatment: clinical psychologists (ph. d. & psy. d. , counselling psychologists, psychological associates (m. a. , psychiatrists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, counsellors, mds. Biomedical intervention: involves the use of biological interventions, such as drugs. Psychotherapy: involves the use of psychological interventions.
