First job involved neurological research as assistant to the famous physiologist ernst. Neuroses: health problem that did not appear to have an organic cause. Freud begins to collaborate with josef breuer (1842-1925) Before working with freud he had a method for treating neurosis (the talking method) or catharsis. 2nd was the dream system (or the unconscious) In normal individuals there is normal regulation between the two systems (sleep and wakefulness) The dream system invades the wakeful system (their theory states that disregulation is caused by trauma) Trauma over stimulates the nervous system - to protect against this the mind may repress the memory of that event. But can easily be brought into the conscious. The part of our mind is not responsive to our deliberate e orts at recall.
