PSYC 1030H Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Random Assignment, Quasi, Scientific Method
Document Summary
A procedure for finding truth by using empirical evidence. Correlational research: allows us to determine if 2 variables are related but does not allow us to make inferences about causation. How tired are you on a scale of 1-10. The results would gives us information about the relationship between drinking coffee and feeling tired. We could not conclude that drinking coffee caused the students to feel less tired. Other possible issues > people who drink coffee sleep more. Experimental research: a research design that helps us establish a causal relationship between variables. 1 manipulation- changing variable to determine its causal power. The variable measure is dv: random assignment- a procedure that allows chance to assign people to experimental or ctrl group. We could randomly assign students to two study conditions. Quasi experimental research- used in cases when random assignment is not possible. For example; impact of college on exam grades.
