The meaning of words and sentences: phonological development. An early stage of speech development in which infants emit virtually all known sounds of human speech. Babble sounds in all cultures are similar. At 6-12 months start to articulate linguistic variations of caregivers. [babbling starts to sound like english: vocabulary development. At 12-18 months, vocabulary of 50 or more words. Usually the names of familiar items [food, toys, body parts, and people important to child] Use of single word to mean much more ex. / cookie" means i want a cookie". Frequent difficulty with consonant clusters ex. / tairs" instead of. Stairs", banky" instead of blanky/ blanket": semantic development. At 5-6 years of age we have several thousand words. We have the ability to convey extremely complex and varied thoughts and ideas. Common speech errors at age 3 ish. Over extension: tendency to extend meaning of word beyond actual usage. [ex. / meow" means all small furry animals even if it"s a dog".
