PSYC 1020H Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Zygosity, Frontal Lobe, Axon Terminal
Document Summary
Behaviour depends on complex information processing in the nervous system. Cells in the nervous system receive, integrate, and transmit information. Nervous system is living tissue composed of cells. The cells in the nervous system fall into two major categories: glia and neurons. Neurons: neurons are individual cells in the nervous system that receive, integrate, and transmit information. Demyelinating disease: damages myelin sheath slows/distorted neural signals, axon deterioration/loss, neurological problems -> movement, sensation, cognition, internal organs, ex/ multiple sclerosis. The axon ends in a cluster of terminal buttons, which are small knobs that secrete chemicals called neurotransmitters. These chemicals serve as messengers that activate other neurons. > carry over info to other neurons/cells: synapses are the points where neurons interconnect. Information is received from the dendrites -> soma -> axon -> then the dendrites of other cells receive information at meeting points called synapses. Impaired neural-glia communication may also contribute to psychological disorders such as schizophrenia and mood disorders.
