Brain automatically change it to a perception. Passive process of bringing information from the outside world into the brain via sensory receptors. The active process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting information brought to the brain by the senses. When expectation influence your perception you have used top-down processing: first attempt to process the information cognitively (using knowledge, beliefs, expectations) Schemas can bias perceptions by creating a perceptual set: readiness to perceive a stimulus in a certain way. Expectancy can be shaped by the context in which the stimulus occurs. Bottom-up processing: sensory receptors register the information and send it to the brain to be analyzed. Thresholds minimum amount of ay given sensation that has to be present for us to notice it. Absolute threshold - minimum amount of a stimulus that is necessary for us to notice is 50% of the time: earliest point you notice it.
