We"ve been thinking about the relationship of the mind to the body, but we can also think about the mind"s relationship to the things beyond the body (in our environment) What if there are objects outside a pen and paper, a phone that serve the same function as parts of the brain, enabling it to calculate or remember? : ex. Inga wants to go to moma, she consults her memory, recalls its location and off she goes. Otto wants to go to moma but has alzheimer"s and can"t recall its location. He has written its location in his notebook. He consults his notebook, gets the info he needs, and off he goes: clark believes there is no important difference between inga and otto, between memory and notebook, brain function and external tool. Implications: our mind"s composition changes often, there isn"t a clear divide between you and the world, you and other people.
