PHIL 1200H Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Sandpaper, Obversion, Consistency
Document Summary
Distinguish between form and the content categorical propositions. To put a sentence into standard form for categorical propositions: identify the subject & predicate terms, if necessary, rephrase the s & p terms so that they refer to classes, decide on a quantifier: all, some, or no. Foolish is the man who seeks fame for its own sake . All men who seek fame are foolish people. Maps out logical relationships between the 4 standard forms. Propositions that cannot both be true but could both be false. Contradictory- propositions that cannot both be true and cannot both be false. Subalternates- x logically implies y but y does not logically imply x. x= beyonce is in peterborough, ontario y= beyonce is in canada right now. Subcontraries- two claims that can both be true, but can"t both be false. Use circles to represent classes or categories and the relationship between them. Whether two categorical propositions are logically consistent with one another.
