Empowerment of patients derives from appreciating that patients can discern their own needs and make decisions for themselves. Nurses can facilitate empowerment by addressing social, political, and environmental factors. Power = having the ability to do or act. Empower = is to facilitate the ability of another person to do or act. Empowerment = a helping process whereby groups of individuals are enabled to change a situation, given skills, resources, opportunities and authority to do so. It is a partnership which respect and values self and others aiming to develop positive beliefs in self and future. Empowerment = a participative process, or partnership between nurse and patient, that is designed to assist in changing unhealthy behaviours ellis-stoll and popjess-vawter. Empowerment = process of personal growth and development kuokkanen. A personal attitude that change is possible is important for empowerment. Requires respect for a person"s personal beliefs and goals.
