NURS 3000H Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Hypocalcaemia, Extracellular Fluid, Edema
Document Summary
Homeostasis: is the state of equilibrium in the internal environment of the body, naturally maintained by adaptive responses that promote healthy survival. Intracellular fluid (icf): fluid found inside the cells; about two thirds of body water is. Extracellular fluid (ecf): fluid found between cells (interstitial fluid and plasma); about one third of body water is ecf. Trans-cellular fluid: fluid in the cerebrospinal space, the gi tract, the pleural, synovial, and peritoneal space; small amount of body water is in the trans-cellular space. Electrolytes: substances whose molecules dissociate or split into ions when placed in solutions. Valence: the electrical charge of an ion. Diffusion: the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to low concentration in liquids, gases, and solids. Facilitated diffusion: the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to low concentration, assisted by a membrane carrier molecule.
