In the 17th and 18th century there is a shit to more violence and restraint. Prior to the 19th century there was no medical monopoly over the treatment of the mentally ill: many priests became mad doctors, anyone could open a madhouse if they had the inancial means to do so. Didn"t need specialized training oten business oriented. Those who didn"t have the means to have a person treated in a madhouse might have been when the community stepped in: only if they were accepted. When authoriies did intervene prior to the 19th century they had limited available opions: might be sent to the local jail only place for them to be secure (generally last resort) Insane were viewed as untreatable, received litle support outside of the family.
