Those who didn"t have the means to have a person treated in a madhouse might have been when the community stepped in: only if they were accepted. When authoriies did intervene prior to the 19th century they had limited available opions: might be sent to the local jail only place for them to be secure (generally last resort) Insane were viewed as untreatable, received litle support outside of the family.
