HIST 3250Y Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Boris Yeltsin, Yuri Andropov, Mikhail Gorbachev
Document Summary
The ambiguities of perestroika and glasnost: revolution from within . Brezhnev stayed in power until he died in 1982. The andropov hoax that he like jazz. Andropov was a very sick man when he came into power, he did not have much time to do anything, tried to reduce alcohol consumption, giving police the right for random checks, he did not do too much. Chernenko came into power after, seemed like they were making the safest choice. Gorbachev finally came into power after, he watched the soviet leadership get older and older. He wanted to make sure that the era of stagnation was over. Alexander yakovlev was put in charge by gorbachev, brought him in as his advisor. Changes started off slow then picked up. Glasnost = openness new policy of allowing more freedom in the press, new kind of openness, like the thaw in its early year, sort of like liberalization.
