The great patriotic war : the great patriotic war . Operation barbarossa began on june 22, 1941. Parts of the government were evacuated during the way. Many prisoners of war by germans, many of the soviets were starved to death. November 1941 they already captured ukraine and belarus, 40% of soviet territory. Stalin never admitted how many people died during the war. Losses were about 27 million, 17 million civilian deaths. Poland main site of the holocaust. Turning point of the war was the battle of stalingrad. Bloodiest battle in human history, more casualties than anytime before or after. Germany lost strength and supplies, never effectly recovered after this battle. Moment that had echoes for year, even after stalin was gone. Defined the soviet union after the war, great heroic moment. Always portrayed as a great triumph, story told about great commanders. Stories themselves were sanitized to make it look like a great victory.
