Miss america protest (1968: bus loads of people showed up to protest the pageant, beauty industry, fashion industry, and pageant industry is turning women into objects to be viewed like animals at the county fair. Said there was going to be a bra burning: crowned a live sheep as the winner. Freedom trash can: bras were put in the freedom trash can (along with other things like high heels) Said there was going to be a bra burning but there wasn"t: that"s where the term comes from. Criique of women as sexual objects: challenge the beauty standards of society. Pageant is racist: beauty = whiteness, most of the protest took place outside, but some managed to get inside to the pageant, chanted freedom for women. Pageant was on live television but the camera man never showed the protestors: but the out going miss america began to stumble over her speech.
