The meiji transformaions led to imperial aspiraions: looking to become equal with the west and gain colonies. Kanghwa treaty 1876 (unequal treaty forced on korea by japan: korea was forced to open up tongnae to japanese trade. Two more ports were opened in 1881 (inch"on and wonsan: japanese diplomaic representaion in seoul, extraterritoriality; Japan claimed korea was in its line of interest". Sino-japanese war 1894-5 = opportunity for imperial expansion. Meiji emperor: we must endure the unendurable : russia leased port arthur in 1898, western spheres of inluence in china= second scramble" for china. Without declaring war: batle of mukden = 40,000 japanese casualies.
