Third crusade was led by the rulers of france, england. Richard the lionheart was very successful and concurred the island of cyprus. Made a truce that allowed pilgrims access to jerusalem. 4th crusade: didn"t make it too the holy land. Too many ships and not enough money to pay for them. Debt would be forgotten if zara was captured for the people of venice. The pope forgave them for sacking a christian city. Muslims had a lot of toleration for christians. Teutonic nights to conquer and assimilate the pagan areas. Pope would start crusades against their political rivals. This undermined the success of the crusades in the holy land.
