GEOG 2530H Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Geomorphology, Evapotranspiration, Microporous Material
Document Summary
Introduction to the watershed unit and the water balance equation. Input = output +/- storage: input precipitation, output streamflow, storage snow and ice, p= et + q +/- s, precipitation = evapotranspiration + streamflow +/- storage. Watersheds of canada: there are 5 main watersheds found in canada, most people live south the but water is draining north/away. Watershed scale: we can keep dividing the watershed and get smaller and smaller, lots of records of historical monitoring, headwaters are the smallest of the watershed scale. Order: 1 = only 1 connection, 2 = connection between two 1s, 3 = connection between two 2s. Identify high points on the map: topographic maps are used (old school, water flows perpendicular to contours, topographic map lines point upstream most of the time (unless it is subsurface flow) In urban areas, we could have sewers that change the direction of flow.
