Document Summary

Requires constant assessment and decision making by the crime scene examiner. Police officers responding to a crime scene should treat it as active until proven otherwise (known as clearing the scene ) Suspects or anyone in the scene are accounted for. Boundaries of crime scene need to be established and marked (crime scene tape, patrol vehicles, uniform members) Establish asap a crime scene log at point of entry/exit to scene. Restrict access to investigation team members only. Do not alter scene (eat, drink, litter, use washroom, turn on lights) Lead forensic officer and other team members will evaluate scene by completing a walk through. Roles need to be defined (team leader, sketcher, photographer, etc. ) This allows them to: get an overview of the scene. Determine if there is any short lived evidence that could be lost if not dealt with quickly. If there is a body outside and it might rain: strategize a systematic examination and documentation of the scene.
