Two very different versions: one from 1604 and the other from 1616. The 1616 version is longer, and includes more comic scenes and some key revisions. We read the earlier version, was the version performed 25 times at the rose. Theatre during the years following marlowe"s death, and thus is more likely to represent his vision of the piece. He may have spent some years working as a spy. Being educated at cambridge, and travelling on the continent, marlowe was certainly a student of protestant theology, but also quite likely exposed to some of the other counter-currents of thought of his time.
