Canada in the 1960s lecture- april 3, 2014. Student protest turns violent: end of new let and naional student movement. Emergence of rock fesivals- symbolized by monterey pop fesival in june 1967: thousands gather for weekend, listen to great music. August 1969 at a farm in upstate new york. Billed by promoters as 3 days of peace, love, and music: described as an aquarian exposiion- ulimate 60s hippy gathering. Led to traic jams because of the huge number of people, made the decision to just let people in. Marred by violence: hell"s angel killed someone who had a gun. Symbolic of the decline of the counter culture. Fesival scheduled to occur on prince edward island, april 1971. Concerns over an inlux of of-island hippies: they were going to non-conform to the rules, rcmp making people scared about the hippies coming. Juncion "71 is cancelled and instead a one day event is held: one day folk fesival.
