• The Quiet revolution
• Quebec started to take control of its own affairs
• Government spending skyrockets and the education reform
• Viewed in a 'mostly' fond light, but the Quebecois and the First Nations contested the idea of the expo

Cold War
• Post WW2 the relationship between the U.S. and Britain deteriorated with the USSR.

Communism
• Gov't total control over all aspects of life in the country
• Opposite of the free market ideals of democracy
Gouzenko Affair
• Igor Gouzenko defected and sought asylum in Canada (turned away the first time), had stolen documents
showing soviet spies at work in US, UK and Canadian government & scientific departments.
• Had a family in Canada and did not want to go back.
• This sparked the cold war
NATO
• The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (1949)- western Europe and North America
• Both are military alliances
Warsaw Pact
• Eastern Europe Soviet dominance (1955)
Communist Witch Hunts
• communists were identified and purged from trade unions,
• Canadian diplomats were put under suspicion.
H-Bomb/Atomic Bomb
• The cold war spurs on the race for the bomb. Used to end WW2
• Soviets don't have the atomic bomb, but by 1949 they test a bomb, this leads to an escalation of
development of nukes
• An intense buildup of arms between the East vs. West
