Population ecology: focuses on how the population of organizations changes, and on organizational diversity and adaption within a pop of organizations. Population: set of organizations engaged in similar activities with similar patterns of resources utilization and outcomes. Quick reaction to changing customer needs and changing market. There are three stages in the population ecology model: Variation: when new organizational rms appears in the population. Selection: occurs then the organizational variation is able to survive and prosper in a small niche. Retention: when the organization grows large and becomes institutionalized. Becomes major part of the environment for new organizations. Serve other large corporations - corps going global, so are suppliers. Distribution channels, resources more accessible with large demand. Very competitive with new organizations, even institutionalized organ"s are not permanent in the long run. Generalist: an organization that offers a broad range of products or services for a broad market.
