Treatment of the poor: the way neoliberal capitalism treats the poor. The poor are being treated differently now as we switch into a different form of capitalism. There is a shift from the welfare state to the penal state. Neoliberal globalization creates shifts in societies that create new insecurities for middle and low income workers. New insecurities: labour has shifted to contract, term work, unpaid internships, part time work. Middle income families feels insecurities about being able to send their children to university and good schools. Rise of non standard work, lack of unions and erosion of social safety nets. Governments focus on the justice system people. Wacquant believes these are fake insecurities (he is creating moral panic) Disciplining the poor: wacquant and heynen agree the poor are being disciplined.
