According to stats canada (2009) men are more likely to commit suicide than women. Women are 3 to 4 times more likely to commit more suicide attempts than men. Each year one in 167 canadians attempt suicide, but for transgender individuals the rate is one in 9. Aged 15-34 suicide is the second leading cause of death. First nations youth commit suicide 5-6x more likely than non-aboriginal youth. Young males are more likely to commit suicide than young women, ratio 4:1. Twice as frequent to see suicide attempts in adults over adolescents. Underlying mental illness, depression, biological risk factors. Men account for nearly 80% of completed suicides. Not all attempters harm themselves with the intent to die, can be seen as a (cid:498)cry for help(cid:499) Tend to use more violent methods (guns, hanging) Tend to be more familiar with firearms. Women: more likely to use drugs or poisoning compared to men.
