PSYC 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 35: Catatonia, Segway Pt, Prevalence
Document Summary
Hallucinations > perceptual distortions; hearing and seeing things that do not actually exist. Delusions > having distorted thoughts and beliefs, with no rational foundation. Disorganized speech that makes little sense, or speaking in particular manners (i. e. : in rhymes). Individuals tend to jump from one topic to another without any segway. Noticeable motor and movement difficulties, usually very slow and drawn out. Often found in a catatonic stupor, meaning being still like a statue and giving the impression that they are in a standing coma. Better response to certain drugs, especially those that lower dopamine levels, ex: neuroleptics, clozapine, zyprexa. Slow and lengthy (especially in regards to communication and speech) Less responsive to dopamine-lowering drugs, due to brain shrinking as a function of the negative symptoms, which works in opposition with brain pruning. Age of diagnosis is around 25 years old.
