NURS 233 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Fundal Height, Prenatal Care, Fetal Movement
233 perinatal week 3
Pregnancy is 40 weeks and 3 trimesters
• First- weeks 1-13
• Second weeks 14-26
• Third weeks 27 – term
Estimated date of birth(EDB)
Nägele’s rule is a way for calculating EDB
• Determine first day of last menstrual period (LMP), subtract 3 months and
add 7 days plus 1 year
• Alternatively, add 7 days to LMP and count forward 9 months
• Most women give birth from 7 days before to 7 days after EDB
• We assume that all women have a 28 day pregnancy and so this is why there
are alterations and why most women don’t give birth on their predicted date
• Accuracy goes down after 23 weeks that is why you want and ultrasound
before 20 weeks
STUDY the one pager in the PowerPoint a lot
Prenatal care was mostly high and middle class people so the lower income people
were not being reached and there were many barriers to why they couldn’t access it.
Prenatal care: initial visit – asking many questions to fill out a prenatal assessment ,
physical examination, laboratory tests (STI screening, HIV in pregnancy)
Prenatal care: follow up visits
-Interview
-Physical examination
-Fetal assessment including
• Fundal height, - fundus is the top of the uterus and it changes depending on
what week you are in. at 18 weeks you should be 18 cm and so on until 32
weeks then the babies head goes down because they are getting ready for the
birth and its important to empty their bladder to before doing this test
because it can alter the results and when they empty their bladder they leave
you urine so you can do other tests.
• Gestational age,
• Health status,
• Laboratory tests (such as multiple-marker or triple-screen blood test, stis in
pregnancy (p.133), group b streptococcus (GBS) at 35-37 weeks, Rh type and
screen at 28 weeks) know GBS and Rh
• Other tests (ultrasonography, amniocentesis)
• Quickening –first fetal movement you can feel 16-20 weeks
Teaching-maternal and fetal changes
