NURS 208 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Evidence-Based Practice, Nursing Theory, Critical Thinking
September 26th, 2017
Model two: Critical thinking continued
How do you think critically?
Looking in depth and questioning things
It’s being reflective
Being skeptical is a good thing because you are questioning but being cynical it is
not good because you do not take others opinions. Its ego related.
Critical thinking is needed for Evidence based practice
Model three: Introducing theory and health promotion concept
You need theory to inform practice and hypothesis because they are evidence.
Theory develops over time and it is testable.
Theories can help us describe different phenomena’s
Phenomena’s is any thing which manifests itself. Things that just appear
Theory definition: a purposeful set of assumptions or propositions that identify the
relationships between concepts
Theories provide framework for further questions and for practice, provide analysis
and interpretation of information to inform nursing practice, they highlight the
important areas and guide the way. They are the road maps for what we do. And
there are no theories that are perfect there are many that we should use in practice.
Concept: a term to describe a phenomenon or group of phenomenon, a mental
formulation of objects or events. Concepts and be concert (infant crying, wound
odor, a chair) or abstract (love, hope, culture etc.)
Metaparadigm (paradigm means how you view the world. Way of thinking)
describes a global way a professional discipline looks at the world
• Concepts of person (and everyone involved with the patient. Examples:
family, addition group, group of people, community you are working in etc.)
• Concepts of Heath (ex. mind, body spirit, health of a community, population
health etc.)
• Concepts of Environment (what resources they have)
• Concepts of social justices (equal opportunity, access to resources even if
someone is low income)
