Macronutrients are made of organic compounds (carbon bonded to hydrogen) in- clude: carbohydrates, lipids, fats. Vitamins- organic molecules needed in small quantities; play a role in regulation such as energy production, maintenance of vision, blood clotting. Minerals- essential elements which perform a variety of functions including trans- port of oxygen (iron) and muscle contraction. Berries, kidney beans, broccoli: high in fibre. Cookies, cakes, carbonated beverages: high in added sugar. Vegetables, fruits- excellent sources of carbohydrates that also provide vita- mins, minerals, water, fibre. High fibre, vitamin and mineral rich, low-sugar foods have higher nutrient density that low-fibre, high-sugar foods. High-plant foods such as vegetable oils, olives, nuts, avacados: no cholesterol, high in unsaturated fat and not associated with increased risk of heart dis- ease.
