Ethnographic style tries to enter into world of the respondent by appearing to know very little. Topic of convo subject to change as interview progresses. Soaking and poking exp most appropriate when interviewer has limited knowledge about a topic / wants an insider perspective. Better as a source of insight than hypothesis testing bc open-format = inconsistent course of reliable data that can be compared. Good for when researcher already knows a lot abt subject matter and goal is to count how many ppl fall into each category of response. Eg. mass public opinion surveys done by political scientists.
