SA 150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Biological Determinism, Pseudohermaphroditism, American Dialect Society
Document Summary
Sex refers to the biological designation between male/female. Gender is a state of mind and embodied attitude. A site of power, pleasure and subtle coercion. Gender is often used to discipline our thoughts and bodily affects. Cisgender a person whose self identity conforms with the gender that corresponds to their biological sex, not trans. Transgender includes people whose gender identity is the opposite of their assigned sex, no exclusively masc/fem, genderqueer, bigender, pangender, genderfluid, agender. There is no necessity dictating that a body/mind sexed female at birth will present itself to the world as feminine in adulthood and no necessary sexuality to either sex or gender. Conceptions of gender are influenced by politics, culture and history. Sexuality refers to feelings of sexual desire and attraction. Like gender, can be fluid and change over time. Neither your biological sex or gender determines your sexuality. Rejects the idea that male and female genders are natural binary opposites.
