SA 150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Racialization, Ethnocentrism, Cultural Mosaic
Document Summary
An ethnic group: a collection of people who identify with each other and share a common culture, art forms, language, music, traditions and beliefs. Understanding ethnicity is not just a matter of collecting ethnic traits such as language, food, clothing. Over generations and throughout the americas, the genetic traits have become mixed. Racialization does exist: the process in which people are viewed and judged as essentially different in terms of their intellect, morality, values, and worth because of differences of physical type or cultural heritage. Canada"s aboriginal people have been racialized: non-native people have lived in canada for only 3. 3% of its history yet. Prejudice: a rigid and unfair generalization about an entire category of people: prejudices are irrational, long-lasting and not based on fact, prejudices are prejudgments and they may be positive or negative. Racism has been widespread throughout canadian history where ideas about racial inferiority supported slavery.
