Document Summary

Biodiversity loss: conservation biologists estimate that current rate of extinction is 100-1000x natural rate. Spread rapidly causing dmg: non-native species, introduced deliberately or accidently, contributed to more than 50% of all animal extinctions where cause is known, ex. Harvesting of species from the wild at that rates that can"t be sustained: overfishing, fisheries, dominant driver of biodiversity decline in marine environment, overhunting, unregulated hunting and poaching, overharvesting, logging, pet/exotic plant trade. Pollution: accumulation of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients in the enviro, plastics, heavy metals, endocrine disrupters, pesticides, acidification of water. Affects biodiversity by altering the environmental conditions faced by plants and animals. Phenology mismatch in migratory birds (food peak not when eggs hatch anymore) Sara: classification: extinct: no longer living, extirpated : no longer present in wild in certain areas, endangered: facing imminent extinction/ extirpation, threatened: showing high probability of becoming endangered. Special concern: not yet in serious danger, but may be particularly sensitive to human activities.
