PSYC 391 Lecture 9: Psyc 391 - Week 9 Social development in children with DD
Document Summary
Social and emotional development in children with developmental disabilities. Developmental milestones in emotional development: basic emotions, happy, fear, sadness, anger emerge within the first 2 years, more complex emotions, disappointment, embarrassment develop later involve more sophisticated cognitive development such as perspective taking, self-evaluation, comparison to others. Emotional expression: expressing your emotions through your facial expressions. In asd: less positive effect, autonomic response similar to td but self ratings different, mismatch between arousal and subjective experience. If you just look at their face they are not expressing their emotions properly. In fragile x: no delays in emotional expression early, increased negative affect with age, more negatively as they get older, heighted physiological arousal/hyperactivity/irritability. Idea that if you can learn early on from other people regarding how you should react to certain situations could effect the child regarding their development of emotional regulation. Mundy social learning disability: joint attention problems, difficulty with social learning.
