Social values: freedom of choice, protecting rights of the child. Parental demands: physical pain, social stigma. Research evidence: evidence on prevalence, severity, accuracy of screening techniques. In a democratic society only the parents have the right and the burden of making such decisions. This highlights the importance of accurate information, and perhaps a new kind of counsellor is needed with a dual focus on the functional aspects of genetic conditions and family life with genetic disabilities. Consumers need to be involved in social decisions about prenatal tests to a greater extent than they currently are. Stipulate more explicitly the conditions for which screen would be prohibited: eg. , for sex selection (shakespeare, 1999)
