Will approach this class with a clinical/applied perspective. Psychoanalytic approach e. g. , case study of the married man who has 3 married girlfriends. By taking the women away from their husbands, it may be unconsciously motivated by childhood behaviours. It"s very childish, may trace back to relationship with parents. Commonly create these personality theories based on your own life (signif life events, attitudes, social cultural times, etc. ) e. g. , ocd have one of three types of compulsion (counter, checker, cleaner) How do they choose/develop into one and not the others? e. g. , schizophrenic, delusion. What drives the delusions (what determines what kind of delusions they have?) Theorist: alfred adler -- interested in child"s ordinal position (birth order) influence on personality e. g. , first born tend to be high achiever, but also more likely to schizophrenic. Had lots of siblings, had lots of serious ailments, was ran over by a horse drawn carriage twice, had a golden child as an older brother.
