PSYC 365 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Health Canada, Paralanguage, Medical Error
Document Summary
Patients overestimate how much time they spend with the doctor, doctor underestimates how much time they spend with the patient. Basic models of interaction (szaz and hollender, 1956) Szaz - myths in psychiatry - argued against medical model - you can"t catch a mental illness. Active-passive - situation in which patients are unable to participate in their care or make decisions because of their medical conditions. Guidance-cooperation model - communication in which the patient seeks advice from the physician and answers the questions that are asked, but the physician is responsible for determining the diagnosis and treatment. Compliance - referent power: respect the physician"s opinion because they know their shit. Mutual participation: the patient and physician make joint decisions about every aspect of care. Careseekers prefer being called patient to client. Patient = medical model (doctors, psychiatrists, etc. ), client = business model (includes psychologists, physiotherapists, etc)
