PSYC 362 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: John Bowlby, Intimate Relationship
Document Summary
Social relationships were and are essential to survival. Relationships are the best predictor of happiness. Innate tendency to seek proximity and safety from caregiver. Proposed by bowlby who observed infants and their caregivers. Ainsworth extended this idea and examined how children are attached. Secure attachment - calms down quickly once the caregiver returns. Insecure attachment - is avoidant when the caregiver returns; does not look at caregiver. Resistant/ambivalent attachment - are still angry and upset when the caregiver returns; continues crying and slaps toys away. Attachment types may generalize beyond infant/caregiver relationships. Similarities in attachment between infants/caregivers and attachment in adult relationships. Attachment now measured in dimensions (not types/styles) Expectations are additive - each relationship adds to, not replaces, our experiences and expectations. Those with higher anxiety have great declines in optimism about the future of their relationship. When partners feel guilty, anxious individuals maintain relationship satisfaction but the partner suffer.
