Does relationship education work? (cobb & sullivan, 2015) For wives, re has no benefits at all. Couples would even be harmed by their participation in re. Not based on either the empirical or theoretical literature on relationships, not been tested. Assumption behind the skill building programs is that some couples begin their relationships w/o the skills they need to resolve conflict, solve problems effectively, and to support each other through tough times. Based on tbct, (howie markman, scott stanley) Focuses on behavior exchange, communication and problem solving skill acquisition. Assume that couples have skill deficits that over time will lead to erosion of satisfaction when they mishandle relationship problems/ stress. Gold standard in the field, efficacious program. Empirical support showing +ve outcome over the long term. Prevention not treatment, been used w established couples, not distressed couples. Escalation: starts out about laundry and next thing he"s naked. Core prep skills - counteract the danger signs.
