Constructivist from a process-relational perspective are growing in importance. Piaget"s theory is one of the most comprehensive on this topic. Horizontal decalage: inconsistency in reasoning on different tasks. I. e. conservation task - use three coins instead of five. Is a problem when it becomes so simple that you"re testing something different. Children can understand some conservation tasks before they understand others. Operating on forms rather than actual content. The operation becomes formalized - more abstract now. The last stage piaget described - the last form of thinking. Can think of possibilities and test them out systematically. Hypothetical deductive thought: generate hypotheses and test. Formal operational thinking is not found in all individuals or all cultures. Diversification of aptitudes - some kids might be more interested in logics and mathematics (the tests he developed were more related to math and physics) The most likely explanation is that all individuals develop formal operations, but in different areas depending on their experience.
