Before 1982, sexual offences involving children were virtually impossible to prosecute to conviction : recent complaint doctrine, judicial warning, attitudes. Sam stone came to day care for about 2 minutes: walked around, commented on the book being read, waved good-bye, left. 10 weeks later: did sam soil a teddy-bear and rip a book, did you see him do it? (witnesses, he didn"t really do that, did he? (maintained) 5- to 6-year-olds watched a man who was described as a janitor interact with a doll. He described his behavior as cleaning or playing . Children were interviewed 4 times: 3 times immediately and once 1 week later. Interviews included open ended questions and interpretive questions. 3 interview styles for 1st 2 interviews: neutral, exculpatory, incriminating. Child friendly but without too many distractions. Non-contingent support: warm vocal tones, supportive eye contact, frequent smiling, rapport building, relaxed body posture. That is not contingent on what the child says.
