Guide and control much of our behaviour (often without our conscious awareness) Both written and unwritten rule (stop at a stop sign) - law and expected. Not jumping in to the front of a line is obeying a social norm. Behaving in a way others expect us to. Descriptive: based on the perception of what behaviour is typical . Maybe you"re thought of as slightly weird of you don"t conform. Injunctive: norm based on beliefs about what people are supposed to do. Send a thank-you note when you receive a gift. And your descriptive norm is: most people do not litter here. Injunctive: strong belief of people believing you should not litter. There may be a sign about littering as well.
