Common sense does not provide the best answers. Most human behaviour can be scientifically studied. Hypothesis: specific, testable statement about relationships between 2 variables. Description of how variables will be measured or manipulated. Choosing how to bring a social psychological concept to life in a study. Need very specific operational definition to mean anything. Independent variable:variable a researcher changes/measures to see if it has an effect on the dependent variable - proposed cause . Dependent variable: variable a researcher measures to see if it is influenced by the independent variable - proposed effect . Book says observational, experimental, correlation are 3 separate types of research . 2 methods of measurement self-report and observation. Observe people and systematically record their behaviour. Ask people about their psychological states and behaviour. Behaviour changes because they know they"re being watched. Change of behaviour because they know what the hypothesis is (or think they know what the hypothesis is)
