PSYC 260 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Counterfactual Thinking, Confirmation Bias, Stereotype
Document Summary
Automatic thinking vs. controlled thinking important distinction between 2 types of thinking. Much of our thinking and decision making happens unconsciously. Like autocorrect, right most of the time. Mental structures people use to organize info from the social world around them - script . What we notice (sense and perceive) vs attend to (pay attention to) 6 things: schemas are profoundly useful, schemas imply that our preexisting ideas influence interpretation. When a situation is ambiguous, we may fill in the blanks with info that seems to fit. Study: cold prof vs warm prof conditions (same prof) Filled out 2 questionnaires on computer (timed) Task 1: schema consistent, task 2: schema inconsistent. Finished task 1 faster, because we tend to process schema inconsistent information slower: schemas affect what we remember. Memory is reconstructive, we remember bits of info and fill in the rest. Our schemas help us reconstruct this memory. Study: couple, 2 endings: proposal vs sexual assault.
