Chapter 15: behavior and emotional disorders of childhood and adolescence. Historical perspective of child and adolescent mental health. Initial accounts of abnormal child behavior were attributed to inadequate parenting, which meant insufficient moral discipline in upbringing. Children were thought to be incapable of self reflection and reason: therefore, their behavioral problems were seen as a reflection of their environments rather than brain functions. At the end of the 19th century, attention turned to causes of behavior as related to abnormal brain functioning, based on observations of disordered children. Leo kanner created the first textbook of child psychiatry. The book included: personality problems arising from physical illness o o o. Practical guidance on how to obtain a mental health history and the use of psychotherapy as a form of treatment. First forms or research in children mental disorders were descriptions of children with infantile autism. Children with behavioral manifestations of deficient maternal care and overprotection.
